Career Transition Programs and Services
Change is constant: Make sure you are equipped
We all know that organisational change is stressful for the individuals who are caught up in it, and perhaps the biggest fear of any employee at such times is redundancy. Career transition services provide support and guidance for employees affected by organisational change. They can have a positive impact on peoples' careers, and ultimately their lives.
No employer wants their employees left unsupported when exiting the organisation through a redundancy. Senior managers experience a great deal of stress as they often feel responsible for employees with whom they have developed a relationship over many years. Planning and implementing a career transition program for departing employees ensures they feel respected and maintain respect and good will toward the organisation.
Redundancies also impact on staff who are retained. Productivity and morale can wane at times of uncertainty and insecurity. This can be relieved if retained employees feel reassured that departing employees are being given effective forms of support. Retained employees may also benefit from independent professional support in managing organisational change.
Sensitivity is crucial in helping people transition into new careers. A ‘one size fits all’ approach to career transition is bound to fail and services need customising to meet individual needs. A successful career transition involves:
- an assessment and evaluation of personal skills, strengths, values and accomplishments
- an exploration of career options, including self-employment
- preparation of a professional resume and other job search materials
- development of a self-marketing plan
- training in job search skills including networking, interviewing and negotiating
- access to administrative support
- access to work spaces and office services
